PORTA VIA – A BRIEF HISTORY

PORTA VIA – A BRIEF HISTORY

In 1994, Peter Garland left behind a burgeoning career in public relations to open Porta Via when Canon Drive was the quietest street in the Beverly Hills business district. Borrowing money from family, Peter sensed a solid business opportunity by serving the clients of four legendary hair stylists with salons on the block.

Porta Via, Italian for “take away,” offered a menu that would travel well focused on fresh baked goods, locally sourced produce, quality meats and seafood. Not only did the concept succeed in the salons, Porta Via soon attracted locals who lived and worked nearby. Starting with only # tables in 900 square feet, Peter stood out front to draw people in with his welcoming personality. As the success of Porta Via grew, the 400 block of north Canon Drive came to life with a number of thriving businesses.

Porta Via expanded twice to better serve its customers. Today Porta Via Beverly Hills occupies 4,000 square feet including tables inside and out, a full bar/event space and a sidewalk patio that is frequently packed with Hollywood legends who relax into the welcoming ambience created by Peter and his staff.

Peter was instrumental in lobbying the City of Beverly Hills to allow outdoor dining. Today the 400 block of N. Canon Drive has been transformed into “the” restaurant row of Beverly Hills.

The menus at Porta Via are inspired by Peter’s personal cooking philosophy – – to combine the best seasonal organic and natural ingredients simply prepared. Peter carefully selects wines from small producers that share his commitments to sustainable and organic practices. Porta Via has been presented with awards by Wine Spectator for the past several years.

Garland has been called the “Mayor of Canon Drive” He is on first-name basis with most of his regular customers.

PALISADES VILLAGE – A NEW CHAPTER IN PORTA VIA HISTORY

In the Spring of 2018, legendary developer Rick Caruso (The Grove, Americana on Brand) invited Peter and Porta Via to be part of his exciting new Palisades Village project.

“We are honored to be one of five restaurants to join this exciting new development,” said Garland.  “We have built our reputation by serving the local community and the ambience of the Palisades Village is a perfect fit for our next step.”
